Porcelain Crowns in East Kilbride

What are porcelain crowns?

Porcelain crowns are thin pieces of porcelain that are custom made to fit over the top of any of your natural teeth you are having problems with.

What can porcelain crowns fix?

Porcelain crowns can fix a variety of tooth concerns – your teeth might be damaged, broken, weakened, decayed or need a large filling. They are thicker than a veneer so are a great option for fixing slightly trickier dental issues.

Are there different types of porcelain crowns?

Yes, we offer a number of different options of porcelain crowns.

Porcelain bonded to Zironia are a strong and metal free option, perfect if you are worried about the appearance of metal. There has also been some health concerns around the use of metal in dentistry, so if this worries you this option will put your mind at rest.

Porcelain crowns with a metal ‘jacket’ are the most common form of crown whereby white porcelain is placed over base metal.

What is involved in getting porcelain crowns?

Getting porcelain veneers is a fairly quick and painless dental treatment that is very popular with customers.

You will first have an initial consultation with us to discuss what improvements you would like your crown to make and what we can do to help you.

A second appointment will prepare your teeth to have the porcelain crown fitted, this involves having an impression taken so your crowns will fit perfectly when they are made and deciding on the shade of your crown so it is the best fit for your existing smile. You might need local anaesthetic to have an impression taken but if the tooth has no nerve this will not be necessary. In this visit we will also fit you with a temporary crown before the real thing.

Your custom made crowns will be made in around two to three weeks but at Avondale we work with some of the best award winning dental laboratories and have forged fantastic working relationships to make sure that your lab made restorations are of the highest quality, both clinically and aesthetically.

The next appointment will be when we fit the bespoke crown itself. The outer surface of your prepared tooth will be treated with a special etching acid to create a surface suitable for the porcelain crown to bond to. Your dentist will then fit the crown and make sure you are happy with how it looks before securing it in place.

Your porcelain crown might feel a little funny to begin with as you get used to the new tooth but within a few days there should be no problems at all. If you do feel any discomfort, just come back to see us and we can do some adjustments.

How do I maintain porcelain crowns?

The good news is that you maintain your porcelain crowns much like your original teeth – regularly brush, floss as usual and make sure you attend your regular dentist check-ups. Follow these steps and they should last for years — a brilliant investment for your dream smile!
