5 reasons to see a Dental Hygienist

5 reasons to see a dental hygienist

Dental hygienists are specially trained to work as part of the dental team and play an important role in preventing gum disease and therefore tooth loss. So we’ve given you 5 reasons that you should visit your dental hygienist regularly:

  1. Preventative reasons

Our philosophy at Avondale Dental Practice is to use preventative measures whenever we can to avoid unnecessary drilling and uncomfortable procedures for our patients.

2. To keep your teeth looking white

Overtime, tobacco, red wine and other food and drink can stain your teeth and leave them looking yellow. Your hygienist will be able to remove these stains properly which can make your teeth appear even whiter than they were before.

3. For a deep clean

Even if you have excellent oral hygiene, food particles can get stuck in hard-to-reach areas, like under your gunline. A specially trained hygienist will remove these particles along with any build-up of tartar and plaque on the tooth surface.

4. To check on overall health

Apart from cleaning your teeth and gums, your hygienist also checks for early decay, faulty fillings, infections and any signs of oral cancer. If something more serious is spotted early, then it can be dealt with and hopefully cured.

5. Advice on maintaining your dental hygiene

A dental hygienist can provide advice on flossing and maintaining good oral hygiene. They may also advise you to use small, interdental brushes to clean those hard-to-reach areas in your mouth and show you how to use these properly without causing any damage to your mouth or gums.

We recommend that you should see a dental hygienist at least twice a year, so if you’d like to book an appointment, then please give us a call on 01355 234 919 or contact us via our website- we’d love to hear from you.

Hygiene Visits at Avondale

Hygiene Visits at Avondale

Research shows that seven out of ten people do not visit the dentist or hygienist regularly. If you consider yourself to be one of them, then don’t worry; it’s never too late to start a good habit and keep it up. Visiting your hygienist regularly is paramount in maintaining good oral and overall health. Gum disease is one of the number one causes of tooth loss in the UK and studies have shown that regular hygiene visits can prevent this from happening.

At Avondale, we believe that prevention is better than cure which is why we always encourage our patients to visit our hygienist regularly. So, to convince you to pick up the phone and make that appointment, we have listed below the main benefits of visiting your dental hygienist or therapist:

  • Removing the build-up of plaque and tartar – even though you brush your teeth really carefully, you are bound to miss some areas of plaque, mostly because you can’t get at them with your brush. After about 3 days, the plaque hardens into tartar, and this cannot be removed with a toothbrush. It needs to be scraped over with the hygienist’s special tools.

Removing all the areas of tartar that you have missed means that you no longer have patches that are giving off acids. If you leave these undisturbed, they will be leaching acids straight onto your tooth enamel and gums and will do so until the hygienist removes them.

  • Removing staining – when the hygienist gets to have a go at your teeth, you will get any residual staining removed too. You emerge with cleaner, brighter teeth and will feel better about your smile.
  • Education- the hygienist can also help spot areas where you can brush up on your cleaning techniques and give you tips on what brushes and flosses to use.
